Shop Somerset this Christmas and support county’s businesses

Posted by Cato Cooper on

We want people to have themselves a merry little Somerset Christmas this year and support all the independent makers out there, who are the economic lifeblood of our county. You can get everything you need locally from local producers, growers and makers including turkeys, sprouts, fresh trees and even crackers. By buying locally every penny you spend goes back into the community and helps provides jobs here in Somerset.

Instead of buying mass produced toys and gifts, why not pop something in your shopping basket that is unique and handmade, with love, by artisans and Somerset craftspeople and makers?

Here in our shop 70% of the items we sell under our roof are handmade in the area, including wonderful willow sculptures made from locally sourced willow and woven together in Combwich. We also have luxurious homemade soy candles hand poured in the business owner’s very own home in Taunton and door stops hand sewn right here in Wellington.

We also have artworks that are hand illustrated by an artist in Yeovil, as well as greetings cards that are digitally drawn and designed by a super talented maker in Wellington. Shoppers can also get their hands-on pieces of art, designed and hand cut from old maps and children’s books, by a small business in Taunton.

To encourage people to shop Somerset this Christmas we have created a display at the front of the shop where people can see lots of items that are made here. There are also many more dotted around the shop and can be spotted thanks to handily placed ‘local maker’ stickers.

When a shopper buys something from an independent maker, they’re helping to put food on that person’s table or help them to pay their bills that month, instead of lining the pockets of corporate chains.

There are plenty of unusual items here for people to have a look at and they are reasonably priced too. By buying from us, shoppers are supporting the very backbone of, not only the nation’s economy, but the local community, local employers – small, independent, local businesses.

We are also displaying a Shop Local poster in our window to let people know that they can buy items made locally from us.

We’re also encouraging other businesses to display the poster too if they have locally made or sourced products. The poster will be available to download here. The posters will let shoppers out on the street know which shops need their support.
