Say ‘hello’ to Rocket & Co

After graduating in 2003 with a first class honours degree in General Illustration Susie Thomas went on to work as a freelance illustrator, specialising in children’s books and greetings cards and then as an in-house artist/designer for a greetings card publishers based in Bath.

After having her first child in 2011 Susie set up Rocket & Co. It was initially created as a side-line alongside her illustration work and as something she could pick up and put down around her young children but has now become her main creative focus.

Susie works from her home in Taunton, Somerset, which she shares with her partner, who is also an artist, their two children and dog Rocket.

She designs and makes original artworks using old, recycled and vintage materials. She loves the idea of creating a new artwork using old, unloved items such as torn books, old music sheets and out of date maps.

She is a keen rummager and searching through charity shops and car boot sales is an enjoyable part of the process for her. Susie cuts all of the pieces for her artwork by hand and says she loves the way the colours of old maps, music sheets and books lend themselves to art pieces. The look, feel and even smell of the old pages has much more depth than modern ‘shiny’ papers and as a result make the artworks more unique and attractive.
