Susie from Crump & Co has been with us since May, 2016 and you’ll find her shop on the ‘stage’ area, on our very top floor. It’s full of unique gifts and homewares, which have been made in the UK or are Fairtrade.
You might be familiar with Susie’s products if you have popped into the shop but may not be so familiar with the face behind the business, so we cornered Susie for a quick chat and here’s what she had to say:
“For a number of years I worked in the creative side of an Internet-based fashion company. I was involved in the design and development of the clothing ranges and travelled to Turkey frequently liaising with their clothing factory.
“In addition to this is I also helped to plan and implement photoshoots and was lucky enough to be able travel extensively to South Africa to oversee the styling and visual side to the business.
“I actually embarked on a gap year, initially to recover from major surgery, and this is when I made the decision to start my own business in some way using my knowledge, contacts and skills. I know this is quite an overused term, but I needed a better work/life balance and to spend time with my family.
“So Crump & Co was born (Crump is my maiden name). I joined The Emporium Somerset in May, 2016 and have never looked back! It’s a fabulous platform for my business and Sean and Cato have been immensely supportive with my development and progress so far.
“As with most businesses, I have evolved along the way and I think of myself as a unique gift and homeware store. I have a passion for stocking goods made in the UK and/or that are Fairtrade. I really want to be part of the high street revival, it’s immensely important for the local economy and also for people to feel that ‘community spirit’.
“I spend a few hours three/four times a week working for Crump & Co, liaising and meeting customers and being the face behind the business.
“Downtime for me is spent travelling (my other passion in life!) and spending time with family/friends. I love to cook and I also run the village book/reading group.
“I forget to mention, Crump & Co has a little helper, my Airedale dog, Connie!
She is always in my office with me and when I need inspiration or thinking time we escape across the fields nearby.”
