Our fabulous trader Jan Olive joined The Emporium in 2016 with her soft furnishings made from hand-painted and printed fabrics.
She has been a painter for many years but went on to become more interested in design. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Interiors Textile and Surface Design.
We recently shared a cuppa with her and had a quick catch up to find out more.
What’s your favourite daytime drink, tea or coffee or do you prefer something else?
I love coffee, I’m sub-human without it!
What do you enjoy most about making/creating/what you do?
I love researching a theme, illustrating it and then turning my drawings into repeating patterns, which I use to create my soft furnishings. I try and make every piece unique by using my own photography and print-making techniques.
Name one thing you couldn’t live without and why?
My family and my crazy, wonderful friends. Am I allowed two things?
What is the most important tool to help you when you’re crafting/creating/working?
An eraser. I draw in pencil then go over my sketches with a black pen. Rubbing out the pencil always makes me look like a super-talented illustrator!
If money was no object, where in the world would you most like to go?
Antarctic for me would be a real adventure. It is so remote, so beautiful and, of course, the penguins!
In a normal week, how much time do you spend making/crafting/working in your business?
Most of the time. If you are a creative person, you never stop thinking about it. It’s like having a thousand tabs open, all the time!
When you’re not working what else do you like to do?
I enjoy travel, food, time with friends and visiting London. I was born there and often feel it’s pull. There is always something to see in the galleries, museums and on the streets. I walk for miles and come home exhausted but uplifted and inspired.
